Between the 13th and 17th centuries, church builders and fresco painters in the Balkans fused Byzantine and Romanesque traditions, and the four monuments of this Serbian Orthodox ensemble mark that art at its height. Dečani Monastery, built in the mid-14th century as the mausoleum of King Stefan Dečanski, the domed churches of the Patriarchate of Peć and the Palaiologian frescoes of the Holy Virgin of Ljeviša shaped Balkan painting for generations. UNESCO inscribed the group in 2004.
