Stevan Nemanja, founder of the medieval Serbian state, withdrew from the throne in the late 12th century and endowed Studenica, which grew into the largest and wealthiest of Serbia's Orthodox monasteries. Behind its walls, the white-marble Church of the Virgin and Church of the King hold Byzantine frescoes of the 13th and 14th centuries that rank with the finest anywhere. UNESCO inscribed the monastery in 1986.
