Two hundred islands and islets lace the brackish channels where the Saloum's three river arms meet the Atlantic. What lifts this Senegalese delta beyond scenery is human time made visible: 218 shellfish mounds, accumulated over centuries of fishing and gathering, some stretching hundreds of metres, with tumulus burials on 28 of them that have yielded remarkable artefacts. A living archive of West African coastal settlement, the delta was inscribed by UNESCO in 2011.
