Where the caravan roads of ancient Arabia crossed at the edge of the Empty Quarter, the city of Qaryat al-Faw prospered — then fell silent, deserted in about the 5th century CE. Close to 12,000 recorded remains chart occupation from the Palaeolithic to late pre-Islamic times: rock carvings, funerary tumuli, forts and caravanserai, an oasis with its ancient water system, and the sacred mountain of Khashm Qaryah. The cultural landscape joined the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2024.
