Taiga meets the subtropics in the Sikhote-Alin range above the Sea of Japan, producing one of the world's most remarkable temperate forests: Amur tigers and Himalayan black bears share these slopes with brown bears, lynx, sable and wolverine. Listed by UNESCO in 2001 and enlarged in 2018 to take in the Bikin River Valley, the property protects vast coniferous and broadleaf forests where southern Manchurian wildlife overlaps the northern taiga.
