Along the middle Lena River in Yakutia, stone towers roughly 100 metres tall crowd the bank for kilometre after kilometre — a colonnade carved not by any sculptor but by cold. Winters of –60 °C and summers of +40 °C drive the frost-shattering that splits the rock along joints into isolated buttresses divided by steep gullies. The Cambrian rock also yields exceptional fossils. Lena Pillars Nature Park received UNESCO World Heritage status in 2012.
