Russia's most revered working monastery grew up around the tomb of St Sergius of Radonezh in Sergiev Posad, northeast of Moscow. Fortified walls and towers of the 15th to 18th centuries enclose the Trinity Lavra's cathedrals, among them the Cathedral of the Assumption where Tsar Boris Godunov lies buried; Andrei Rublev painted his celebrated Trinity icon for this monastery. Pilgrims still stream in daily. UNESCO listed the ensemble as World Heritage in 1993.
