Four thousand shafts and pits pock the hills of Świętokrzyskie, where prehistoric miners chased seams of striped flint between about 3900 and 1600 BCE. The four sites of Krzemionki preserve underground galleries and knapping workshops — among the most complete Stone and Bronze Age flint-extraction systems ever found, source of the banded stone prized for axe-making. UNESCO inscribed the mining region in 2019.
