Tarnowskie Góry Lead-Silver-Zinc Mine and its Underground Water Management System

Three centuries of fighting water underpin Tarnowskie Góry. In this Upper Silesian mining field, one of central Europe's most important, miners dug adits, shafts and galleries for lead, silver and zinc — and engineered an underground water-management system that both drained the workings and supplied towns and industry, later helped by a 19th-century steam pumping station. Mostly invisible from the surface, the mine joined the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2017.
