One man's Renaissance dream stands complete in eastern Poland. Chancellor Jan Zamoyski founded Zamość in the 16th century on the trade road linking northern and western Europe with the Black Sea, and had the Paduan architect Bernando Morando realise an Italian 'ideal city' from scratch. Layout, fortifications and arcaded houses blending Italian and central European manners survive intact. UNESCO inscribed the Old City in 1992.
