The Americas' first civilisation left its capital in the Supe valley. Caral, a 626-hectare complex on a desert terrace, is around 5,000 years old — the oldest known centre of civilisation in the New World — with six large pyramidal structures, sunken circular courts and earthen platform mounds in a plan of striking sophistication. Even a quipu, the Andean knotted recording device, was unearthed here. UNESCO inscribed the Sacred City in 2009.
