Lines and Geoglyphs of Nasca and Palpa

Only from the air do the drawings resolve: a hummingbird, a monkey, a spider, geometric lines running for kilometres across the desert crust. Scratched into the arid plain between 500 BC and AD 500, about 400 km down the coast from Lima, the Nasca and Palpa geoglyphs spread over roughly 450 km2 and probably served ritual astronomical purposes — though they remain one of archaeology's great enigmas. UNESCO inscribed them in 1994.
