Clouds drift below Machu Picchu as often as above it. Set at 2,430 m on the forested eastern flanks of the Andes, the Inca Empire's most astonishing urban creation seems to grow out of the mountain — immense walls, terraces and ramps flowing with the natural rock above the upper Amazon basin and its wealth of species. The Historic Sanctuary became a Mixed UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983; entry permits sell out months ahead.
