Kuk Early Agricultural Site

Agriculture was invented here, independently. In the swamps of Kuk, 1,500 metres up in Papua New Guinea's western highlands, people worked the wetlands almost continuously for 7,000 — possibly 10,000 — years, and around 6,500 years ago crossed the threshold from plant gathering to true farming, leaving cultivation mounds and wooden-tool-dug drainage ditches in the archaeological record. UNESCO inscribed the 116-hectare site in 2008.
