Mushroom-shaped islands float on turquoise water in Palau's southern lagoon — 445 of them, uninhabited humps of limestone ringed by reefs with over 385 coral species. Dugongs and at least thirteen kinds of shark patrol the channels, and nowhere on Earth are marine lakes more concentrated, each an evolutionary experiment in isolation. Stone villages abandoned in the 17th and 18th centuries add a human epilogue. UNESCO inscribed this Mixed site in 2012.
