Street grids, drains and municipal order — 4,500 years ago. Moenjodaro, raised entirely in unbaked brick beside the Indus in the 3rd millennium BC, is among the earliest examples of deliberate town planning anywhere: a high acropolis on massive embankments overlooking a strictly organised lower town. The great city of the Indus civilisation joined the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1980.
