From his hilltop palace, the Hidi of Sukur looks out over terraced fields, sacred markers and the traces of a once-thriving iron-smelting industry — a complete physical record of a living society in Nigeria's Mandara hills. In 1999 UNESCO made Sukur the first African cultural landscape on the World Heritage List, honouring a place where spiritual and material culture remain visibly intertwined.
