León Cathedral

Central America's grandest cathedral rose slowly: begun in 1747 to plans by the Guatemalan architect Diego José de Porres Esquivel, León Cathedral was completed only in the early 19th century, its style migrating from Baroque toward the Neoclassical along the way. Sober, light-flooded interiors set off a richly ornamented sanctuary vault, a Flemish wooden altarpiece and Antonio Sarria's Way of the Cross paintings. UNESCO listed it in 2011.
