Star Fort, Matara

The Star Fort of Matara, on Sri Lanka's southern coast, is a compact Dutch colonial fortification built in the 18th century to guard a river crossing and the approaches to the older Matara fort nearby. Laid out to a star-shaped plan — the hallmark of European bastioned military design — its low ramparts, angled bastions and handsome gateway, dated 1765 and bearing the arms of the Dutch East India Company, enclose a small courtyard once used as a garrison and store. Ringed by a moat and set within the palm-fringed coastal town, the fort is a well-preserved miniature example of the star forts the Dutch raised across their Indian Ocean possessions. Together with the larger fortified quarter on the spit between river and sea, it reflects the colonial military architecture that shaped Matara, and today houses a small museum recalling the town's layered past.
