Thousands of temples, stupas and monasteries scatter across a bend of the Ayeyarwady River — the skyline of Bagan, capital of a regional empire at its height in the 11th to 13th centuries. Frescoes and sculptures survive inside many of the monuments, and the plain remains a living place of Buddhist pilgrimage. After decades of anticipation, UNESCO inscribed Bagan's seven-part sacred landscape in 2019; sunrise balloon flights show its scale best.
