Three moated brick cities — Halin, Beikthano and Sri Ksetra — anchor the story of the Pyu kingdoms, which flourished in the dry zone of the Irrawaddy basin for more than a millennium between 200 BC and AD 900. Excavations have exposed palace citadels, burial grounds and towering Buddhist stupas, along with irrigation works so well engineered that some remain in use. UNESCO inscribed the Pyu Ancient Cities in 2014 as Myanmar's first World Heritage Site.
