Petroglyphic Complexes of the Mongolian Altai

Twelve thousand years of Mongolian life are scratched into the rocks of the Altai. Across three petroglyph complexes in Bayan-Ölgii, the oldest carvings show big-game hunters in a partly forested landscape of 11,000–6,000 BC, later panels record the shift to herding, and the youngest capture the rise of horse-borne nomadism through the Scythian era and the Turkic centuries that followed. UNESCO inscribed the complexes in 2011.
