Silver made this road. For 300 years, from the mid-16th century onward, mule trains hauled ore from the mines around Zacatecas, Guanajuato and San Luis Potosí along the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, the Royal Inland Road running north from Mexico City towards Texas and New Mexico. UNESCO's 2010 inscription covers 55 sites plus five existing World Heritage properties along 1,400 km of the route — waypoints where Spanish and Amerindian worlds met and mixed.
