Protective town of San Miguel and the Sanctuary of Jesús Nazareno de Atotonilco

San Miguel de Allende began in the 16th century as a garrison town guarding the Royal Route inland, then blossomed in the 18th into a showcase of Mexican Baroque sliding towards the neoclassical. Fourteen kilometres away, the sanctuary church of Jesús Nazareno de Atotonilco holds mural cycles by Miguel Antonio Martínez de Pocasangre that helped earn the pair joint UNESCO inscription in 2008 — a vivid snapshot of cultures mixing in New Spain.
