Tlacotalpan drowses on the Gulf coast the way it has since the mid-1500s: a Spanish colonial river port of wide streets, shady trees and houses fronted by columns painted every colour imaginable. Remarkably little of its original urban fabric has been lost, which is precisely why UNESCO declared the town a World Heritage Site in 1998 — few places preserve everyday colonial Mexico so completely.
