Grey whales cross an ocean to calve in the lagoons of El Vizcaino: each winter, Ojo de Liebre and San Ignacio on Baja California's Pacific side fill with mothers and newborns, sometimes surfacing close enough for boats to touch. The sanctuary's waters also shelter blue whales, sea lions, elephant seals and four species of threatened marine turtle amid stark desert coast. UNESCO inscribed the whale sanctuary as natural World Heritage in 1993.
