Historic Town of Guanajuato and Adjacent Mines

Silver from Guanajuato once flooded the world: by the 18th century this Mexican mountain town was the planet's foremost source of the metal, wealth that paid for the Baroque splendour of La Compañía and La Valenciana churches. The town squeezed into its ravine so tightly that traffic now flows through famous subterranean streets, while the Boca del Infierno mineshaft drops a sheer 600 metres. UNESCO inscribed Guanajuato and its mines in 1988.
