Jungle presses in on every side of Palenque, where some of the finest buildings the Maya ever raised emerge from Chiapas rainforest. At its peak between AD 500 and 700, the city produced architecture of rare elegance and delicately carved mythological reliefs; the Temple of the Inscriptions concealed the tomb of the great ruler Pakal, one of archaeology's most celebrated discoveries. UNESCO inscribed the pre-Hispanic city and its national park in 1987.
