Cliff of Bandiagara (Land of the Dogons)

For centuries the Dogon have built their villages against the great sandstone wall of Bandiagara, tucking granaries and shrines into ledges where the cliff-dwelling Tellem people lived before them. Along roughly 150 kilometres of escarpment in Mali, mask ceremonies, ancestor rites and carved togu na meeting shelters keep one of West Africa's richest living cultures rooted in a spectacular landscape. UNESCO inscribed the mixed natural and cultural site in 1989.
