Beneath the rainforest of Sarawak lies a hollow world: at least 295 kilometres of surveyed caves, including the Sarawak Chamber — roughly 600 by 415 metres and 80 metres high, the largest known underground chamber anywhere. Each dusk, millions of bats spiral out of Deer Cave to hunt. Above ground, razor-edged limestone pinnacles pierce the slopes of Gunung Mulu National Park, whose 52,864 hectares hold some 3,500 vascular plant species. UNESCO inscribed the park in 2000.
