Rising abruptly from the plains of southern Malawi, the granite massif of Mulanje is among the largest inselbergs on Earth — an island of rock, mist and endemic cedar trees. For the Yao, Mang'anja and Lhomwe peoples the mountain is alive with gods, spirits and ancestors, honoured through rituals that bind communities to its peaks, forests and rivers. UNESCO inscribed the Mount Mulanje Cultural Landscape in 2025, recognising a sacred geography where belief and ecology intertwine.
