Madagascar split from every other landmass over 60 million years ago, and its wildlife went its own way — nowhere more visibly than in the eastern rainforests of the Atsinanana. Six national parks strung down the island's escarpment protect the relict forest where lemurs, found nowhere else on Earth, reach their greatest diversity alongside legions of endemic plants and chameleons. UNESCO inscribed the serial property in 2007; illegal logging later pushed it onto the danger list.
