La Thuile, Aosta Valley

La Thuile is a quiet, snow-sure resort in the western Aosta Valley, linked across the frontier with La Rosière in France to form the international Espace San Bernardo domain of around 150 km of pistes. Its position beneath the Little St Bernard Pass gives it a remote, uncrowded feel and some of the most reliable snow in the region.

The terrain is notably varied and often empty. Long, north-facing runs on the Italian side hold cold snow well, while the sunnier French side offers wide cruising; together they allow full cross-border days. La Thuile is prized by advanced skiers for its extensive off-piste, tree runs, and the availability of heli-skiing, one of the few places in the Alps where it is permitted.

The village sits at around 1,440 m on the site of a former mining and industrial settlement, giving it a workmanlike authenticity rather than a manicured resort gloss. This, plus its distance from the big-name crowds, keeps prices and lift queues moderate.

Snow reliability is a real strength thanks to altitude, aspect, and the area's exposure to snow-bearing systems from both sides of the border, supporting a dependable December to April season.

Practical notes: La Thuile is reached via Courmayeur and the Aosta Valley, close to the Mont Blanc tunnel. Its blend of quiet, snow-sure pistes, serious off-piste and heli options, and a genuine village makes it a rewarding choice for adventurous intermediates and experts who prefer space to scene.
