Vrbas (river)

The Vrbas River cuts a deep limestone canyon south of Banja Luka in northern Bosnia and Herzegovina, and its steep gorges hold the country's most demanding commercially rafted whitewater. The river gained international attention when the canyon hosted world rafting and kayaking championships.

The whitewater ranges from approachable to serious. The lower canyon offers exciting Class III–IV rafting through named rapids in a dramatic walled gorge, while the upper Tijesno canyon delivers steep Class IV–V drops for experts. Snowmelt-fed spring flows make the harder sections genuinely powerful, and the constricted limestone channel concentrates the current into fast chutes and holes.

The gorge scenery is striking, with sheer white cliffs rising above green water, historic hydro dams and the reconstructed mountain road that clings to the walls. The proximity to Banja Luka makes the Vrbas an easy day trip, and the same canyon supports climbing and other adventure sports. The canyon road and its tunnels give easy access for scouting, and the same limestone walls host sport-climbing routes, so many visitors combine a morning on the water with an afternoon on the rock.

The season runs from spring into autumn, with the biggest and most challenging water in April through June and steadier flows through summer. Outfitters based near Banja Luka run trips matched to ability, from scenic grade-three floats to committing expert descents. Steep, fast and scenic, the Vrbas offers the most serious canyon whitewater in Bosnia and a competition-proven venue for skilled paddlers.
