Kernavė Archaeological Site (Cultural Reserve of Kernavė)

Five grassy hill forts rise side by side above the River Neris at Kernavė, remains of a defensive complex that guarded one of medieval Lithuania's chief towns. People lived in this valley for roughly ten millennia, from the late Palaeolithic onward, until the Teutonic Order destroyed the town in the late 14th century; layers of settlements, burials and ancient field systems survive beneath the turf. UNESCO inscribed the archaeological reserve, 35 km from Vilnius, in 2004.
