Quandary Peak

One of Colorado's friendliest fourteeners, Quandary Peak rises to 14,265 feet near Breckenridge, its East Ridge a straightforward route that makes it a popular first high summit for hikers new to the state's biggest mountains.

The standard climb is about 6.75 miles round trip with roughly 3,450 feet of gain, mostly Class 1 and easy Class 2 walking on a well-worn path above treeline. The grade is steady rather than technical, though the altitude and exposure to weather remain serious.

Practical detail: no climbing permit is required, but a summer parking reservation and shuttle system manage the crowded trailhead, and hikers should plan accordingly. Mountain goats frequent the ridge, and afternoon thunderstorms demand an early start and a firm turnaround time.

June through September offers the snow-free season; in winter and spring the peak becomes a mountaineering and avalanche-aware objective. Accessible from the resort towns of Summit County, Quandary delivers a genuine high-alpine experience with a relatively forgiving route.
