Horse Pens 40

Horse Pens 40 is a private mountaintop park on Chandler Mountain in northern Alabama, famous among climbers for its field of sandstone boulders. Long a gathering place and once a natural corral, the site now draws boulderers from across the Southeast.

The rock is Pottsville sandstone, weathered into rounded, sculpted boulders with slopers, pinches, and unusual water-worn features. The climbing is bouldering, done above pads without ropes, and the style is famously technical, relying on balance, body tension, and cunning use of the rounded holds rather than raw power. Problems range from easy warmups to hard testpieces, spanning the full V-scale from beginner grades through the double digits, with a concentration of classic moderate problems that make it welcoming to newcomers.

Practical detail: the park is privately owned and charges an entry or camping fee, with on-site camping, a general store, and restrooms, making it easy to stay for a weekend. The boulders sit in a compact wooded area with very short approaches. It hosts climbing festivals and competitions that fill the campground in season. Birmingham and Chattanooga are within a reasonable drive.

Season and character: the prime season is the cooler half of the year, roughly October to April, when the sandstone offers the best friction and the southern humidity has faded, and winter days can be ideal. Summers are hot and humid, softening skin and grip. With its distinctive rounded stone, festival atmosphere, and easy camping, Horse Pens 40 has become an institution of Southeastern bouldering, a place where the puzzle-like slopers reward technique over strength.
