Domes Beach

Domes Beach is one of Rincón's classic surf spots, on the northwest point of Puerto Rico beside the historic Punta Higüero lighthouse. Named for the domed containment building of a decommissioned nuclear reactor nearby, it is a focal point of the island's winter surf scene.

The wave is a reef break that produces both rights and lefts, throwing well-shaped, powerful walls when winter swells arrive. It can handle size and turns fast and punchy on the bigger days, making it best for intermediate and advanced surfers, while smaller swells open it to a wider range of abilities.

North and northwest Atlantic groundswells drive the surf, most consistent between November and March when winter storms track across the ocean. The water is warm all year, so wetsuits are unnecessary and sessions can run long.

Domes sits in a scenic, lively corner of Rincón. The lighthouse park above the break is a favoured lookout, and in the cooler months humpback whales are regularly spotted from shore, giving the spot a reputation for whale watching as well as surfing.
