Olón

Olón is a relaxed beach town on Ecuador's Santa Elena coast, immediately north of the busy surf hub of Montañita but with a far quieter, more family-friendly feel. Its wide, sweeping beach makes it a comfortable place to learn and to spread out.

The surf is a long sandy beach break, generally gentler and more forgiving than its famous neighbour, which makes Olón a favourite for beginners and longboarders. Bigger swells bring steeper, more powerful sections for improving surfers, but the broad, open strand keeps peaks manageable and uncrowded most of the time.

North and northwest swells deliver the best waves, strongest between December and April, while smaller surf persists through the rest of the year. Warm equatorial water means boardshorts are all that is needed, and the long beach offers space to find a peak of your own.

Olón balances surf with an easygoing village atmosphere. A hilltop sanctuary chapel overlooks the coast, offering sweeping views, and the town's low-key restaurants and guesthouses draw a calmer crowd than Montañita's nightlife just minutes away. That proximity lets visitors dip into the party scene while sleeping somewhere peaceful. With its accessible waves, warm water and laid-back charm, Olón is a welcoming base on Ecuador's surf coast.
