Mole Beach

Mole Beach, known in Portuguese as Praia Mole, is one of the most scenic and popular surf beaches on Santa Catarina Island in Florianópolis. Framed by green hills and sandstone cliffs, it is both a serious surf spot and a lively social gathering place.

The wave is a beach break with a notably strong, steep shore break and shifting sandbar peaks. It can be powerful and demanding close to shore, best suited to confident intermediate and advanced surfers, while the open beach offers manageable corners on smaller, cleaner days.

South and southeast groundswells bring the best surf, strongest through the southern autumn and winter from April to September. The island's varied coastline means that when Mole is blown out or too big, nearby beaches such as Joaquina offer alternatives. A light wetsuit is common outside summer given the cooler subtropical water.

Praia Mole is also a scene in its own right. Backed by paragliding launch ramps on the surrounding hills and a cluster of beach kiosks, it draws a mix of surfers, sunbathers and a vibrant social crowd, and is well known for its inclusive, festive atmosphere. As part of Florianópolis, a city ringed by more than forty beaches, it makes an ideal base for surfers wanting variety, nightlife and natural beauty together.

It anchors a wider island surf trip. Santa Catarina Island counts more than forty beaches, so when Mole is too big or wind-affected, surfers shift to Joaquina, Campeche or the quieter south, all a short drive away. Florianópolis provides a full city's worth of lodging, food and nightlife, and the paragliders launching from the surrounding hills add to the beach's animated feel. Strong shore-break currents deserve caution, and a light wetsuit is common outside the warm summer months.
