Reñaca is a lively beach resort just north of Viña del Mar on Chile's central coast, its hillside stacked with apartments overlooking a long crescent of sand. In summer it fills with Santiago holidaymakers, and it doubles as an accessible, popular surf spot.

The wave is a beach break offering peaks along the strand that suit beginners and intermediates, with gentler sections for learning and punchier ones on bigger swells. Surf schools operate here, making Reñaca a common place to take a first lesson, while stronger days give improving surfers steeper faces to work.

Consistent Pacific swell keeps waves rolling in year-round, with the cleanest conditions on offshore mornings. The cold Humboldt current means a full wetsuit is essential even in summer, one of the surprises for visitors expecting warm resort water at this latitude.

Beyond the surf, Reñaca is about the seaside scene — beachfront restaurants, ice-cream stalls, a promenade and easy access to the neighbouring cities of Viña del Mar and Valparaíso, the latter famous for its colourful hillside houses and bohemian street art. The combination of dependable, forgiving waves and a full-service resort town makes Reñaca a convenient base for surfers who also want nightlife, culture and comfort close at hand.

It suits a mixed trip. Because Reñaca sits within the greater Valparaíso conurbation, surfers can combine sessions with city sightseeing, from Valparaíso's funiculars and murals to Viña del Mar's gardens. Surf schools, rentals and beachfront cafés line the sand, making it easy for beginners to get started. The catch is the cold Humboldt water, which surprises visitors and demands a good wetsuit even under summer sun. Weekends and the December-to-February holidays bring the biggest crowds to the beach.
