Namotu

A small island in Fiji's Mamanuca group, Namotu sits at the southern end of the chain off Viti Levu, close to its more famous neighbour Tavarua, and shares access to one of the richest concentrations of reef waves in the Pacific. It operates as a compact surf-and-watersports resort island.

Several world-class reef breaks lie within a short boat ride. Namotu Lefts is a fun, workable left-hand reef wave breaking near the island, suited to a range of abilities; Wilkes Passage offers a longer, powerful right; and Swimming Pools provides a mellower reef peak, while the heavy left of Cloudbreak and the reeling Restaurants are close by for advanced surfers. This variety means both intermediates and experts find rewarding waves.

The surf season runs April to October, the Fijian dry season, when south and south-west groundswells from the Southern Ocean are most consistent and the trade winds are favourable. The waves break over coral, so reef awareness matters, though several of Namotu's breaks are more forgiving than Cloudbreak's notorious ledge. Water is warm throughout the year.

Namotu is a dedicated resort island built around surfing, diving, kiteboarding, stand-up paddling and fishing in the surrounding lagoons and passes. Its size and setting give it an intimate, all-inclusive feel amid brilliant tropical water and reef. Reached by boat from Nadi on Viti Levu after an international flight, the island offers a slightly more accessible spread of quality reef waves than its celebrated neighbour, in one of the most scenic surf zones anywhere in the South Pacific.
