Jan Juc

A beach suburb of Torquay on Victoria's Surf Coast, Jan Juc fronts Bass Strait immediately west of the town centre and just short of the famous Bells Beach reef. It is a favourite of local surfers for its consistent, exposed beach break and its relaxed, low-key character.

The wave is principally a beach break, with sand banks producing lefts and rights along a beach backed by eroding clay cliffs. Because it faces the open Southern Ocean, Jan Juc catches plenty of swell and can serve up punchy, powerful peaks that suit intermediate surfers, while smaller days offer manageable waves for improvers. Reef sections at either end add variety, and strong currents mean it demands respect and attention to the patrolled areas.

Autumn to spring, roughly March to October, brings the most reliable surf, when south and south-west groundswells arrive with offshore north-westerly winds. The water is cold throughout the year, so a good wetsuit is needed, and winter swells can be large and heavy along this coast.

Jan Juc sits within easy reach of the Surf Coast's headline waves, with Bells Beach and Winkipop just around the point and the surf-industry hub of Torquay minutes away. The beach is watched by an active surf life saving club, and the clifftop walk offers wide views over Bass Strait. Backed by coastal scrub rather than development, it retains a natural, unhurried feel. Around ninety minutes from Melbourne, it is a dependable everyday break for those exploring the start of the Great Ocean Road.
