Sopela

Sopela sits on the cliff-lined coast just west of Bilbao, its beaches tucked beneath tall bluffs and reachable from the city on the metro. This easy access from a major city makes it one of the busiest and best-loved surf spots in Biscay.

The beaches are consistent beach breaks, picking up almost any swell thanks to their open north-west exposure. Peaks shift along the sand at Arriatera and Atxabiribil, offering a mix of gentle rollers for beginners and faster, hollow banks for stronger surfers when the swell has size and the tide is right. The cliffs give some shelter from side winds, helping keep the faces clean.

Autumn and winter bring the most reliable and powerful groundswell off the Bay of Biscay, with southerly offshores grooming the peaks, while summer stays smaller and friendlier. Because it catches so much swell, Sopela is often surfable when flatter beaches nearby are quiet.

Above the beaches sits a small town well set up for surfers, with schools, board rental and bars along the clifftop and beachfront. The metro link makes it a genuine day trip from central Bilbao and the Guggenheim, while nearby Meñakoz and other Biscay reefs lie close by. Steep ramps and steps drop from the cliffs to the sand, so beach access takes a little effort.
