Somo

Somo is Cantabria's surf village, sitting on a sandy spit across the bay from the city of Santander, to which it is linked by a short ferry ride. Its long, dune-backed beach is the region's main surfing centre and one of the most reliable learner beaches on Spain's north coast.

The wave is a mellow beach break with peaks along the sandbars and generally gentle, rolling walls that make it ideal for beginners and the busy surf schools based here. As the beach curves toward the Santander sandbar, more powerful and better-shaped peaks appear, and on bigger, cleaner swells experienced surfers find fast, punchy sections toward El Puntal.

Autumn and winter deliver the most consistent north-west groundswell, groomed by southerly offshore winds, while summer offers smaller, friendly surf and warm-water days. The bay setting means it stays rideable when more exposed Cantabrian beaches are blown out.

The village is relaxed and surf-oriented, with camping, guesthouses, board rental and cafes clustered near the sand, and the ferry making Santander's restaurants and culture easy to reach. The flat approach and wide beach give simple access, and the surrounding Ribamontán al Mar coast, an officially designated surf reserve, holds many more breaks within a short drive.
