Sabratha's three-storey theatre backdrop, its sandstone columns framed against the sea, is one of North Africa's great Roman sights. The town began humbly as a Phoenician trading post moving goods out of the African interior, passed through the Numidian kingdom of Massinissa, and was rebuilt in grand Roman style during the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. UNESCO inscribed the archaeological site on Libya's coast in 1982.
