Archaeological Site of Leptis Magna

When a son of Leptis Magna became emperor of Rome, he repaid his hometown lavishly: Septimius Severus endowed the Libyan port with a colonnaded street, a grand forum, a basilica and a harbour to match any in the empire. Preserved under drifting sand for centuries, the city's theatre, market and arches make it one of the most complete Roman urban landscapes anywhere. UNESCO inscribed Leptis Magna in 1982, ranking it among the Mediterranean's supreme ancient sites.
