Brazilian modernism landed on Lebanon's coast in 1962, when Oscar Niemeyer began designing an international fairground for Tripoli: a 70-hectare composition crowned by a sweeping boomerang-shaped exhibition hall some 750 metres long. Left incomplete when war halted work, the ensemble stands as one of the Arab world's defining works of 20th-century modern architecture. UNESCO inscribed the Rachid Karami International Fair in 2023, placing it simultaneously on the danger list to spur its preservation.
