Tyrian purple — the dye of emperors, milked from murex shells — made this Phoenician port wealthy enough to plant colonies as far away as Carthage and Cadiz. Alexander besieged Tyre famously in 332 BC, building a causeway that turned the island city into a peninsula. Today its Roman legacy dominates: a monumental arch, colonnaded streets and one of the largest hippodromes surviving from antiquity. UNESCO inscribed Tyre in 1984 for this deep Mediterranean pedigree.
