The Venta river tumbles over Ventas Rumba — often called Europe's widest waterfall — right beside the old town of Kuldīga, a western Latvian gem that served the Duchy of Courland as an administrative centre from the 16th to the 18th century. Its street grid survives from that era, lined with log-built houses and facades showing the touch of craftsmen from around the Baltic. UNESCO inscribed Kuldīga in 2023 as a remarkably intact small trading town of the duchy's golden age.
